The Forensic Architecture studio in Colombia
Plano Negativo is a pedagogic, artistic and investigative studio that brings together interdisciplinary practitioners across Latin America. After the launch of the project between the Colombian Truth Commission and Forensic Architecture (FA) in 2021, there has been a demand for more kinds of visual investigations to be conducted in the region. Plano Negativo was created by the leaders of the FA/Truth Commission collaboration in order to address this urgent need and to rethink the emerging field in the context of Latin America. We are dedicated to developing rigorous practice-based research that weaves historical and archival analysis with contemporary issues. Our methods employ time-based 3D modelling, remote sensing and cartographic analysis, as well as documentary and experimental filmmaking. We are focused on environmental justice, police brutality, and histories of political violence, forced disappearance and the legacies of the Cold War in Latin America.
While we are based in Colombia, our projects entail the intensive participation of artists, designers and scholars from different parts of the region, with the aim of developing a network of visual investigation in the context of the Americas, recognising the impact that situated context has on the formulation of new research methodologies.
